An evening of fun turned into tragedy for Alessandro Tocco, 29, originally from Chieti, who died suddenly at dawn on Sunday while he was in a nightclub in Sant Antoni, Ibiza.
The young man, who worked on the island as a cook during the summer season, collapsed on the ground after feeling ill. Rescue efforts were in vain: he died during transport to the hospital.
The Spanish Guardia Civil is now investigating the case, having already ordered an autopsy to shed full light on the causes of the sudden death. The news quickly reached Italy, shaking the communities of Chieti and San Giovanni Teatino, where the parents and sister of Alessandro, known to all as “Topolino”, live.
According to local newspaper Diario de Ibiza, Tocco was in the club with an Italian friend when, around six in the morning, he started feeling ill .
Transported to an infirmary inside the nightclub, his conditions immediately appeared critical. The club staff called for help and an ambulance took him to the Can Misses hospital, where, however, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
In the morning, the Guardia Civil informed the honorary vice consulate of Italy in Ibiza and Formentera. Since there are no relatives of the young man on the island, the general consulate in Barcelona was also involved, which alerted the Italian authorities.
Alessandro Tocco would have turned 30 on October 8th. After graduating from the Ramiro Ortiz middle school in Chieti and graduating from the Umberto Pomilio professional institute, he began a career as a chef that took him around Europe. He had worked in Corfu, England (in the county of Kent), and in various Italian locations between Salento and Abruzzo.
He loved his job, as demonstrated by the words he posted on social media: “When you love what you have, you have everything you need” (“If you are grateful for what you have and love it, then you don’t need anything else to be happy”).
