Three inmates were executed in Japan, the first since December two years ago. Furthermore, these are the first executions under the government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who took office in October after his victory in the general elections.

The Ministry of Justice has not yet confirmed the reports in the local press and the names of the prisoners who were on death row have not been provided.

However, more than 100 inmates in the country have been sentenced to death. Executions are carried out by hanging, usually long after the sentence.
