Flights canceled by airlines around the world jump to 5,600 over Christmas weekend. Decisions taken following the worsening of the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

From the data released by the Flightaware website, today at 13.40 GMT almost 2,500 flight cancellations were reached, of which just over 850 related to trips to the USA, both international and domestic. Over 3,500 those who suffered delays. Yesterday, according to the same source, about 2,400 cancellations and nearly 11,000 delays were reported, which already represents nearly 800 cancellations scheduled for tomorrow.

There are pilots, flight attendants and other staff members who have had to be quarantined after being exposed to the virus, and they belong to various airlines including Lufthansa, Delta and United Airlines.

But Chinese airlines are responsible for most of the cancellations: China Eastern has cut about 540 flights, more than a quarter of its flight schedule, while Air China has canceled 264 flights, about a quarter of its scheduled departures.
