No new barracks for the Pontifical Swiss Guard .

The canton of Lucerne has in fact rejected the construction of a new "home" for the ancient and prestigious elite body intended for the personal protection of the Pope and the garrison of the Vatican City.

The decision was taken, as often and willingly happens in Switzerland , through a referendum .

The project for the building involved public funding of 400,000 Swiss francs (about 400,000 euros).

71.5% of the voters, however, said they were against.

Leading the front of the no, which came out victorious from the polls, were some anti-clerical organizations , such as the Freethinkers Association.
