The Taliban are preparing to reinstate the executions of those convicted of murder and the amputations of the hands and feet of those convicted of theft, but perhaps not in public.
This was said to the Associated Press news agency Nooruddin Turabi, one of the founders of the organization and responsible for the application of Islamic law in the country during the previous government of the mullahs. The Guardian reports it.
In the previous Taliban government, Turabi was Minister of Justice and head of the so-called Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, while now he is responsible for the prison system and is one of the leaders included in the UN sanctions list.
Turabi rejected outrage over past executions, which sometimes took place in front of crowds in a stadium, and warned the world against any interference with Afghanistan's new bosses.
"Everyone criticized us for the penalties at the stadium, but we never said anything about their laws and their penalties," he said. "Nobody will tell us what our laws should be. We will follow Islam and make our laws according to the Koran",
"Hand cutting is very necessary for safety," he said, recalling that when it was practiced it had a deterrent effect. The government, he concluded, is studying whether to carry out punishments in public and will "develop a policy" about it.
When the Taliban were in power 20 years ago, executions of those convicted of murder were carried out with a gunshot to the head fired by a family member of the victim, who also had the option of accepting so-called "bloody money" in exchange. of the life of the condemned.
For the thieves the punishment was the amputation of a hand, while for the crime of highway robbery a hand and a foot were amputated.
