"I am a political prisoner." Steve Bannon , the guru of the American far right and former White House strategist under Donald Trump , has turned himself in at the low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, where he will serve a 4-month sentence for contempt of Congress, guilty that he did not testify in the parliamentary inquiry into the assault on the Capitol.
«I am proud to go to prison today. Not only do I have no regrets, I am proud of what I did," he explained to reporters.
Before donning the orange prison jumpsuit, Bannon recorded the final two hours of his popular podcast 'War Room' near the penitentiary, which, he assures, "will only get bigger and more powerful" while he stays in his cell.
Bannon is the second Trump advisor to end up behind bars for this crime. After 4 months, Peter Navarro will be released from prison on July 17th just in time to participate in the Republican convention in Milwaukee. Bannon, however, will be free a few days before November 5, when he will be able to make his final appeals by returning for the final battle, "like Gandalf", he joked.
In the meantime, limited in phone calls and without internet, he will read books (including the King James Bible, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and a history of the Russian Revolution), write campaign emails to key people and give advice to the tycoon and to Republicans (although he ruled out any role in the campaign and in a future Trump presidency).
The first is a warning: Joe Biden will leave and Donald's campaign risks being left displaced . «Trump's victory in the debate is a Pyrrhic victory. He will remove a rival who he knows he can beat well and an unknown will arise", he prophesied, explaining that the president will not be able to survive the collapse in the polls.
But if Biden withdraws, he continued, he will catch Trump's campaign off guard, taking away his weakest opponent.
«They will look for a messiah and then there will be the honeymoon but, when it comes to the Dem convention in August, whoever it will be, Michelle Obama or Gavin Newsom, will start with a minimum disadvantage of five/seven points».
