A 45-year-old man was sentenced to ten months in prison and 40 lashes for stealing three packets of cashew nuts.

It happened in Iran, as confirmed by the Mehr agency which explains how the sentence is "final" because "the convict did not appeal".

The story has had a lot of echo, receiving strong criticism on the country's social media, with many users asking for the sentence to be annulled.

The man, a father of three children, has been compared to Jean Valjean, the protagonist of Victor Hugo's "The Miserable" who receives a disproportionate sentence for the crime he committed.

Social media users have criticized the judiciary accusing it of underestimating crimes committed at a high financial level but of being able to jail a cashew thief.
