Spanish police, in collaboration with the US DEA , have carried out an operation that dismantled what is considered Europe's most powerful methamphetamine trafficking organization.
The network was based in Spain and the drugs were brought into the country hidden in shipments of marble coming from Mexico.
The operation represents the second phase of the so-called “Operation Saga” and led to the arrest of nine people , including a member of the Sinaloa cartel and the businessman who owned the marble company used as a front by the organization.
During the investigation, officers seized 1,800 kg of methamphetamine in Alicante, in the Valencian Community , including over 40 kg hidden in the base of a 1.5-meter-tall statue destined for Tenerife in the Canary Islands. They also seized 38 kg of marijuana bound for Finland. This is the second-largest methamphetamine seizure ever recorded in Europe, targeting the main synthetic drug supply hub operating between Tenerife, Madrid, Valencia, and Alicante.
During searches of a warehouse belonging to the arrested businessman's marble company , three million euros were found hidden in an underground bunker. The investigation also led to the identification of the transporters' leader, responsible for logistics between Dubai, Mexico, and Spain, along with the other members of the organization, all charged with criminal association, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
