Relative calm in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands , where riots have been recorded for days resulting from what was initially a peaceful protest. Violence has erupted since Wednesday, citizens have joined anti-government protesters who have begun to smash shop windows and ransack shops, setting buildings on fire.

Enraged crowds, witnesses say, marched to demand the removal of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

Three people died in the violent clashes: their bodies were discovered last night by a security guard in a shop in the neighborhood known as Chinatown, in the capital, which had been set on fire.

The governor announced a curfew yesterday and a bit of calm has returned to Honiara. A few petrol stations have reopened, as have various commercial activities.
