Yet another tragedy born of "easy weapons" in the United States.

It happened in Chicago, where an 8-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet over the weekend.

Melissa Ortega the name of the young victim: she was walking on the sidewalk, Saturday afternoon, when she found herself in the middle of a shooting and was shot in the head.

After the rescue, the little girl was rushed to hospital, but the doctors were unable to save her life.

According to initial investigations, the target of the attack was a 26-year-old man who was leaving a shop at the time. He was also injured in the lower back and is hospitalized in serious condition.

According to police sources, a group of criminals known to the police were firing. It would therefore have been a settling of scores.

"We mourn the loss of another student from one of our school communities. This suffering is becoming too common for many Chicago children and families," the Chicago teachers union wrote in a statement.

Chicago shootings increased 11% in 2021 compared to 2020 and 63% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to a police report.
