Donald Trump is ready to sign, as one of his first executive orders on the day of his inauguration as President of the United States, the imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada on all products arriving on American soil.

A measure, explained the president-elect, that will last – explained the tycoon – until the Canadian and Mexican governments put an end to drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and illegal migrants.

But the Trump administration is also ready to impose additional 10% tariffs on all imports made in China , news that has prompted an immediate reaction from Beijing. "No one will win a trade war or a tariff war between the US and China," commented the spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu. "China believes that bilateral economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial," Liu added.

But Ottawa is not having it either: " Canada is essential to the energy supply of the United States," said Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. "Our relationship is balanced and mutually beneficial, especially for American workers," Freeland added, saying that Ottawa will continue "to discuss these issues with the new American administration."
