The decision of the Court of Appeal of Sassari not to grant the extradition requested by Spain for Carles Puigdemont ( arrested in Alghero and released the following day after a night in Bancali) was welcomed with satisfaction not only by the person concerned but also by the MEP Antoni Comin: "That of Alghero for us was an overwhelming legal victory with great political benefits," he told Ansa.

Comin, together with the former president of the Catalan Generalitat Carles Puigdemont and the MEP Clara Ponsatì, was indicted by Spain for the crimes of sedition and embezzlement after the disputed independence referendum in October 2017.

"There has been an absolute loss of credibility on the part of Spain - he maintains -. The one who had told the Luxembourg Court that the arrest warrant on Puigdemont was suspended was the lawyer of the Spanish state, who then took his word back and lost face. The figure of Madrid was very bad also towards Italy, an important ally. Because of the Spanish judiciary, the Italian police in fact risked opposing a decision of the Court of Luxembourg, the image that Spain leaves in Rome it is catastrophic ".

"The Italian institutions have behaved impeccably, they have acted promptly and skillfully in understanding the complexity of the situation", explained Comin. As for the revocation of the immunity of the three leaders by the Eurochamber, he then added that "the events in Alghero show that immunity for me, Puigdemont and Ponsatì is still necessary, at least until the proceedings in progress at the Court European Union will be concluded ".
