At least 69 people have been confirmed dead in the train accident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, caused by the collision between two high-speed trains , a Renfe AVE and an Iryo train, on Wednesday at kilometer 118 of the Madrid-Seville line. This was announced by Emiliano Garcia-Page, president of the Castile-La Mancha regional government , in a statement following today's meeting of the Emergency Coordination Center.

" In addition to the complete bodies, there are 31 bags with partial remains ," Garcia-Page said, noting that the death toll could rise and that 70 missing persons reports have been filed so far.

The presence of partial remains makes identification particularly difficult , the governor noted. "This makes identification extremely complex, and I'm very concerned that everyone is aware of this," Garcia-Page added. The governor did not rule out a further worsening of the toll: "More missing persons reports may arrive, and the discovery of additional victims cannot be ruled out," he explained.

Among the injured, 21 people remain hospitalized in Toledo hospitals, eight of them in intensive care. Overall, in the Castile-La Mancha region, 39 train passengers remain hospitalized in four hospitals, while 71 people have been discharged.

Garcia-Page also announced the downgrading of the emergency to Level 1, with the consequent demobilization of some of the rescue vehicles that have already completed their work. He thanked everyone for the "extraordinary solidarity" received.

Tragedies that "must never happen again," said King Felipe during his visit to some of the injured.
