"We are here for freedom and democracy. You cannot ban love by law. You cannot erase people's identity, our body, we are people with rights. Banning pride is a violation of European constitutional rights."
Elly Schlein said this from Budapest , during the Pride procession , in which, in addition to the secretary of the Democratic Party, many other exponents of the centre-left and Italian politicians are taking part, such as the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda.
Ilaria Salis , on the other hand, was absent, explaining on social media: «Unfortunately, I will not be able to be in Budapest today. As you know, the procedure on the request to revoke my parliamentary immunity, advanced by the Hungarian regime, is underway. I fear retaliation and exploitation, not only against me, but also against those who are in a much more vulnerable condition today» .
"We cannot accept - adds the MEP in her post - that freedom of expression and the right to love who we want, as we want, are being called into question in Europe. These are achievements obtained thanks to decades of struggles by the LGBTQI+ community, which have made our societies more just and freer. We cannot tolerate that today an obscurantist autocrat once again imposes silence, fear, repression. It is wonderful to know that thousands of people from all over Europe will be at the Pride in Budapest today to support the Hungarian LGBTQI+ community . It is an extraordinary demonstration of internationalist solidarity. Let them understand from below: the liberticidal policies of the Hungarian autocrat are incompatible with Europe" , concludes Salis' post.
