Pellegrini, an ally of pro-Russian Prime Minister Fico, is the new president of Slovakia
The nationalist candidate defeats his democratic opponent Korcok in the runoff
Peter Pellegrini is the new president of Slovakia.
Allied with the nationalist and pro-Russian prime minister Robert Fico, Pellegrini defeated the opposition candidate, the diplomat Ivan, in the ballot.
Korcok.
Pellegrini had been at a disadvantage, then the counting of the votes gradually subverted the exit polls. The new president received around 55% of the votes and during the night Korcok admitted defeat.
Pellegrini will remain in office for 5 years.
