The preliminary report on the Air India Flight 171 accident confirmed that both fuel control switches, normally used to turn the engines on or off on the ground, were moved from the "run" to the "cut-off" position shortly after takeoff . The Boeing 787 Dreamliner then began losing thrust and descending, before crashing in the city of Ahmedabad in western India.

The report, released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, offered no conclusions or attribution of responsibility for the June 12 disaster, but did indicate that one pilot asked the other, "Why did you cut the engines?" The second pilot replied, "I didn't." At takeoff, the co-pilot was in command, while the captain was observing.

The switches were then returned to their normal flight positions, which would automatically initiate engine restarts. According to the report, one engine was recovering thrust at the time of impact. The other was restarted, but was not yet recovering .

Finally, it is confirmed that "at this stage of the investigation, no action has been recommended to the operators and manufacturers of the B787-8 and/or GE GEnx-1B engines, which suggests that no significant fault has been found with the aircraft or its engines." Therefore, the focus remains on the pilots .
