«The terrible attack by Hamas struck defenseless civilians with an unprecedented brutality that leaves us shocked and which from our point of view it is right to condemn without ambiguity». Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the peace summit in Cairo.

«Faced with actions like those of Hamas – added the Prime Minister – a State is fully entitled to claim its right to defence, to existence, to the security of its citizens and borders. But a state's reaction cannot and must never be motivated by feelings of revenge. A State bases its reaction on precise security reasons, commensurate with the reasons for security and the defense of the civilian population. This must remain the reaction of a State in the face of terrorism. I am confident that it is also the will of the State of Israel ."

«The impression I have – continued the Prime Minister – is that Hamas's objective was to force Israel into a reaction against Gaza which would create an unbridgeable gap between Arab countries, Israel and the West, compromising peace for all the citizens involved, including those who say they want to defend."

Therefore, Meloni continued, "the target is all of us, and falling into this trap would be very, very stupid."

As for the solutions to the conflict that has once again made the situation in the Middle East explosive, Meloni explained: «We must do the impossible to avoid an escalation of the crisis, to avoid losing control of this crisis, because the consequences would be unimaginable. The most serious way to do it – he concluded – is a political initiative for a structural solution that is based on the perspective of two peoples and two States, a solution that must be concrete and must have a defined timescale".
