Keir Starmer is already Prime Minister of the United Kingdom . Effects of a streamlined system, a few hours after the polls closed, the moderate Labor leader has already officially received from King Charles III the mandate to form the new British government on the basis of the electoral result which ensures Labor a very large majority in the House of Commons.
The formal act, automatic in the United Kingdom system, was sanctioned in the traditional face-to-face meeting between the two at Buckingham Palace, immediately after the resignation of the outgoing conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak. The palace released images of the handshake between the sovereign and the new prime minister of Her Majesty's government.
Labor therefore returns to govern the United Kingdom after 14 years, and does so triumphantly. Labor took home 33.7% of the vote and 412 seats out of the 650 total in the House of Commons . This is because the British voting system is a pure majoritarian system with single-member constituencies (in each constituency the candidate with the most votes is elected). Historic collapse of the conservatives (the Tories), never so bad in the 20th century: 121 seats and 23.7% of the votes . «I am responsible for the defeat. You have sent a clear signal,” said former prime minister Sunak, who will also leave the party leadership. Good result for the Lib Dems, who obtained 71 seats and 12.2% of the votes. And Nigel Farage's Reform UK also obtained four seats in Parliament .
« The country voted for change, for renewal, for the return of politics to public service. Brick by brick, we will rebuild the infrastructure of opportunity ", said Keir Starmer, addressing the country after taking possession of Downing Street in front of the front door of number 10. Greeted by a crowd of supporters, the prime minister also paid the honor of weapons to Rishi Sunak, the United Kingdom's "first head of government of Asian origin".
