"Europe must decide whether to stand on the side of the rule of law or on the side of authoritarianism."
This is the appeal launched by Ilaria Salis , ten days after the decision of the European Parliament on Hungary's request to revoke her parliamentary immunity.
The Avs MEP, in an interview with La Stampa, explained: «If the commission on June 24, and then the plenary in early July, were to vote for the revocation, the trial against me in Hungary would be reopened. An arrest warrant could be issued from Budapest and I could be arrested in Italy or Brussels, while I am at work».
Salis says he fears "a show trial with a certain outcome: my sentence to 24 years in prison, as desired by both Prime Minister Orbán and many representatives of his government who in all these months have continued to call me a terrorist . The Hungarian judiciary is not autonomous," Salis says, "and there is no guarantee that the trial against me will not be influenced by the government, which sees me as its enemy."
For Salis, "it is not a question of defending right-wing or left-wing values, but the founding principles of the European Union and democratic societies."
The MEP also believes that a position taken by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni could be useful for her cause: "It would be beautiful and important: I am still an Italian citizen. I ask for the protection of a right, not of a position."
