Another meeting for Roberto Salis who is trying every way to make everyone aware of the situation of his daughter Ilaria, who has been detained in prison in Budapest for almost a year and, from the latest images arriving in Italy, dragged in chains into the courtroom for the first hearing of the trial in which he has to answer for an attack on two far-right demonstrators. The hope is to bring her back to her homeland with house arrest pending the end of the hearings.

Salis met Ignazio La Russa in his studio in Milan. The President of the Senate has launched an appeal to lower the tone and not to politically exploit the entire affair. “Politicizing this situation, by anyone, is wrong if one cares about respecting the rights of the girl accused in Hungary,” said La Russa. «We all need to tone down if we care about people's rights», he added and, to those who asked him if he defends «an anti-fascist militant», La Russa replied: «Yes, because the merit of the affair. We are talking about an Italian who, regardless of the judgment that one may give, of her ideas, and of the way in which she translates her ideas, whether the fact is true or not that she participated in that expedition, she is still a Italian citizen for whom it is right that the rights of the person are protected". He also said he was "extremely in favor" of granting house arrest for Ilaria Salis and against "the exhibition of the ways in which security is ensured" and that is chains, and he recalled that "before becoming a politician, I am a criminal lawyer, of prison. So for me it is not difficult to identify with the father's desire, first of all, that the dignity of the accused daughter be respected. Starting from this, the closeness was immediate and spontaneous."

The road to bring Ilaria back to Italy is far from simple, but the Salis family is nevertheless satisfied with how a week ended that began with the shocking images of the 39-year-old from Milan dragged in chains into the Budapest courtroom.

The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, spoke on the case in Brussels: «For Ilaria Salis to be able to come to Italy under house arrest she must be placed under house arrest in Hungary. We must think in terms of law. This request must be made by your lawyers. We are working to ensure that all the rights of a detained person are respected but we cannot interfere in the criminal proceedings, because it is not our job and because the judiciary is independent. The less politicized the case, the better it is in the prisoner's interests."
