The outer shell of the Chernobyl nuclear site suffered "severe damage in a drone attack last February," meaning it "lost its key safety functions" and requires "prompt and complete repair," the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced.

The "New Safe Enclosure" (NSS) was built to prevent radioactive leaks from the reactor destroyed in the 1986 nuclear accident. An IAEA team verified that, in the attack last February, the structure "lost its containment capacity", but without finding "permanent damage".

"Limited temporary interventions have been carried out on the roof, but timely and complete restoration remains essential to prevent further deterioration and ensure long-term nuclear safety," said Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
