Stop donations via Facebook and Instagram to support organizations, non-profit entities and organizations involved in fundraising for charities .

A feature that arrived on Facebook in 2015 and implemented on Instagram four years later, and often used in the case of birthday or anniversary celebrations, choosing a "non-profit" destination and sharing useful information with your contacts to support your cause .

From July 2024, at least in the European Economic Area, all this will no longer be possible, as announced by Meta with a note sent via email to its users who have participated in one or more fundraisers in the past.

«We inform you – we read in the note – that starting from 1 July 2024 the fundraising tools will no longer be available on Facebook and Instagram in the member countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) . The last day available to make a donation to a charitable organization is June 30th. After this date, fundraising tools will no longer be supported in the European Economic Area."

The reason could be related to the new GDPR and the use of data. By allowing the transaction to potentially any member of the platforms, managing (and storing) their data meticulously as Europe requires could be too complex an operation for Meta to manage, which is why the link is directly to the organisations' web spaces.

The decision could therefore mean the loss of important support for non-profits , which will also have to adapt their websites technically and normatively, in compliance with the stringent European standards on data processing and the legislation regulating online transactions. As long as they do not rely on third-party services.
