Tragedy on Christmas Eve in the Aegean Sea. At least 27 people died in the sinking of two separate boats with migrants on board.

The first shipwreck occurred off the coast of Antikythera, the second a few hours later near the island of Paros: respectively 11 and 16 victims.

In Antikythera 90 people were found on the island's beaches, including 11 women and 27 children, in Paros 63 were rescued. Three women and a newborn were among the victims.

The second boat, which left Turkey, was headed for Italy. Furthermore, in the previous night a boat carrying about fifty people sank in the Aegean Sea, dozens are missing.

Greece, with Italy, Spain and Malta, is one of the main access routes for migrants to Europe. The minister of navigation Giannis Plakiotakis harshly attacked the gangs of traffickers: "They are responsible, they are indifferent to human life, they amass dozens of people without life jackets in ships that do not comply with the most basic safety standards".
