She opened her eyes and recognized her parents . Twenty-two days after the New Year's Eve massacre in Crans Montana, Elsa Rubino , the fifteen-year-old student from Biella hospitalized in Zurich , woke up from a coma. "It was a positive day because Elsa recognized us," said her father Lorenzo, who added: "It's a great emotion." Elsa was at the Constellation to celebrate the New Year when the violent fire broke out . She has already undergone two operations in Switzerland for her injuries, and a third on her intestines was scheduled in recent days , but it was postponed because her condition was too delicate. The prognosis is still guarded, and the girl remains hospitalized in intensive care.
Meanwhile , it's almost time to leave the hospital for some of the young people injured in the New Year's Eve massacre in Crans-Montana and currently hospitalized at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan. Ten young people, most between the ages of 15 and 16 , are still hospitalized at the Milanese hospital following the serious burns they suffered at Le Constellation, and some of them could be discharged very soon, even in the next few days, "if their clinical condition continues to improve," explained Guido Bertolaso, Lombardy Region Welfare Councilor. "From the very first moment," he emphasized, "our commitment has been daily and constant: we are following and caring for them as if they were our children or, as far as I'm concerned, grandchildren." Yesterday, to support her family, 29-year-old Eleonora Palmieri, a veterinarian originally from Rimini, was transferred to Cesena hospital. Another patient was transferred last week to Milan's Policlinico Hospital, a hospital specializing in respiratory conditions, where they can best treat the severe respiratory failure caused by toxic fumes inhaled during the fire.
For those remaining at Niguarda, the treatment process remains complex and long-term , with monitoring and prevention phases expected to continue over the coming weeks. However, despite the complexity, "we are receiving" extraordinary responses from these patients, Bertolaso emphasized, "and our hospital system is once again demonstrating quality, effectiveness, and great humanity." The goal is "we can't say yet, but the path we're taking is the right one." Of the ten hospitalized patients, four are in intensive care and six are in the Burns Center . The situation is also improving for Leonardo and Kean, two 16-year-old classmates from Milan's Virgilio High School. Doctors have awakened them from deep sedation and they now communicate through a computer on which they can view video messages from friends and relatives. Francesca and Sofia, both 16, also from Virgilio High School, are also hospitalized at Niguarda. The group of students were on vacation together over New Year's Eve, staying at Francesca's parents' house. Giuseppe Giola, a Milanese, was the first to arrive from Switzerland by helicopter on the evening of January 1st at Niguarda Hospital, where he is being treated for burns, primarily to one hand, but has not been intubated for several days and his condition has improved. Those who remain hospitalized still face operations, like Manfredi, a 16-year-old from Rome, who will undergo another operation within the week.
