A new treatment for Covid-19 is undergoing clinical trials in Australia that is based on the transfer of antibodies from one person to another and promises to reduce the risk of hospitalization by more than 70%, particularly helping those who do not. it can be vaccinated for medical reasons.
As explained by researchers at the Kirby Institute of the University of New South Wales, neutralizing antibodies, which help fight the virus, play a critical role in sparing hospitalization for positive patients. Such antibodies are typically acquired through vaccination, but the study shows that the antibodies can be transferred from one donor to another person.
Preliminary results published on the Institute's website show that antibodies can be taken from a vaccinated or previously infected person, or even produced in the laboratory, and administered to the patient. This would be "very good news" for people "who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons," writes the head of research, Eva Stadler of the Institute's Infection Analytic Program. "The treatment is proving effective in preventing a severe disease for this group, when carried out early in infection, and may be an alternative way to boost immunity to the virus - added - If the patient is treated as soon as he becomes symptomatic, sufficient antibodies can be donated to protect him from severe disease ".
