Another indictment, the fourth in five months, against former US President Donald Trump.
The tycoon, who will have to return to the courtroom for the usual formalities by August 25 , was indicted for having attempted to subvert the outcome of the presidential vote in Georgia in 2020 in various ways, in a conspiracy with 18 other people. A Fulton County jury in Atlanta Georgia approved the charges filed by District Attorney (DEM) Fani Willis after hearing key witnesses.
Also targeted are his former personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, his former chief of staff Marc Meadows, as well as lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and John Eastman, considered the architects of the plan to use fake pro-Trump voters in Georgia and other states won by Joe Biden .
The charges, divided into 41 counts of indictment (13 for the Donald), revolve around the anti-racket law : the one used against criminal associations, including mafia-type ones, to condemn not only the perpetrators but also the principals . Among the crimes, the conspiracy to impersonate a public office (the story of the false voters) and commit a series of forgery (the unsubstantiated claims about the rigged elections), and soliciting a public official to violate his oath of allegiance : i.e. the phone call Trump made to then Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to ask him to find the 11,780 votes needed to get him past Joe Biden.
"My decisions are based on facts and the law," prosecutor Willis said at an overnight press conference, explaining that she will try to get a trial within six months . Instead, the defense aims to challenge the district attorney's lack of jurisdiction and transfer the case to federal justice (with crimes that would thus fall within the power of pardon ).
