The Spanish government has granted a partial pardon to Juana Rivas , the woman sentenced to two and a half years for not returning her children to her father, the Italian Francesco Arcuri, within the terms established by justice. The Iberian media reported this, citing sources from the executive.

The sentence was reduced to one year and three months, and the withdrawal of parental authority for six years was commuted to 180 days of socially useful work, explains the Efe news agency.

Rivas, who lived in Sardinia with Arcuri and the two children in common, returned home with the two minors in 2016. The following year, she did not bring them back to her father as ordered by the Spanish justice and was not found for about a month, remaining in an unknown place together with the two minors. After that period, he showed up in a police station of the Guardia Civil with his two children, who now live in Italy with their father.

The Spanish government's pardon now comes following a long judicial dispute between Rivas and Arcuri, at the request of the woman. Rivas now has a 10-month sentence to serve. He has already served 5, spent between a social reintegration center and house arrest.

In statements to the Iberian media, his lawyer Carlos Aránguez made it known that his client's intention is to ask that she be forgiven even the part of her sentence still to be served.

Arcuri's Spanish lawyer, Enrique Zambrano, has instead made it known that they will appeal against Rivas's recovery of parental authority.
