Italy was hoping for a dignified detention, and indeed that is what Antonio Tajani had said. But during some phone calls with her parents and her partner Daniele Raineri, a journalist for the Post, yesterday Cecilia Sala explained the real conditions of detention, which are those to which all prisoners detained in Evin must submit, a maximum security prison that is the symbol of political repression in Tehran and where the journalist has been detained since last December 19 for "violation of Islamic law".
Yesterday's were the first contacts that Cecilia Sala has had since December 27, the day of the visit of Paola Amadei, Iranian ambassador to Tehran.
The journalist sleeps on the floor, on a blanket, in a very narrow cell, as long as she lies down , reports the Corriere. Above her is another blanket, to protect her from the cold and the blinding light. The special treatment for those entering Evin requires that the light is never turned off .
The Italian government also sent her a package containing books, sweets and basic necessities, including a mask to protect her eyes. The package was never delivered to Cecilia , as she herself reported in her phone calls. In addition, they also confiscated her eyeglasses .
“Hurry up,” Sala, who was very tired after these first two weeks of detention, asked her interlocutors. In short, anything but dignified treatment.
