Summit at Palazzo Chigi to try to resolve the case of Cecilia Sala , the Italian journalist detained since before Christmas in Iran. And, right at Palazzo Chigi, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also received Elisabetta Vernoni, the mother of the reporter imprisoned in Teheran on charges of violating Islamic laws and who in her latest communications said she was "very affected" , as she was forced to sleep on the floor, with the lights always on, and even deprived of her glasses.
"The Italian Government confirms its commitment to the Iranian authorities for the immediate release of Cecilia Sala, and, pending this, for treatment that respects human dignity," reads a note released after the summit.
This morning , the Iranian ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri was received at the Farnesina and reported that the journalist "had been provided with all the necessary facilities, including repeated telephone contact with her loved ones".
The ambassador himself reiterated what would essentially be Tehran's request for Sala's release, that is, the liberation of Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, the 38-year-old Iranian engineer blocked on 16 December by order of the American justice system at Malpensa airport and for whom Washington is requesting extradition .
"The Italian government is expected to reciprocally, in addition to accelerating the release of the detained Iranian citizen , provide the necessary welfare facilities that the latter needs," the Iranian embassy in Rome wrote on X.
Abedini's lawyer also asked for house arrest for the 38-year-old, a request that was however denied.
