Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won the Canadian legislative elections. The results of the vote, still preliminary, do not allow to establish whether it will lead a majority or minority government.

Carney has thus convinced voters that his experience in managing economic crises makes him ready to face the ambitions of American President Donald Trump.

Only a few months ago, the road to the return to power of the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre seemed clear, after ten years under the leadership of Justin Trudeau. But the return of Donald Trump to the White House and his unprecedented offensive against Canada, with tariffs and threats of annexation, have changed the situation.

Trump’s trade war and threats to annex Canada, renewed in a social media post on Election Day, have outraged Canadians and made relations with the United States a key campaign issue.

Carney, who had never held elected office and replaced Trudeau as prime minister only last month, has based his campaign on an anti-Trump message.

And speaking to his supporters in Ottawa after his election victory, he said his country must never forget the American “betrayal.” “Our old relationship with the United States is over,” he said, “because President Trump is trying to break us in order to own us.”

Conservative Leader Poilievre also vowed to work with the Liberal government to counter U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war and threats of annexation. "We will always put Canada first," he told supporters, adding: "The Conservatives will work with the prime minister and all parties with the common goal of defending Canada's interests and getting a new trade deal that leaves these tariffs behind us, while protecting our sovereignty."
