The man arrested yesterday on charges of slitting the throat and disemboweling a 32-year-old man in a park in Pont-au-Metz, near Amiens, northern France, confessed.

More than 24 hours after being arrested, the 27-year-old suspect admitted to the crime, according to Le Figaro, citing sources from the Amiens prosecutor's office. According to the sources, the arrested man clarified during questioning that he "did not know the victim."

Previously unknown to law enforcement, the individual was identified "through a number of elements, including a cell phone found not far from the victim's body, which led to his arrest," said the Amiens prosecutor's office, which has opened an investigation into voluntary manslaughter. According to the prosecutor's office, "the victim lived in the same neighborhood as the arrested individual, but it is not currently known whether the two knew each other."

The horrific murder has sown fear and dismay in the quiet town of Pont-du-Metz, a town of 2,500 inhabitants, but the arrest of the suspect has now allowed a relative return to calm . "Hikers and onlookers are repopulating the park; the progress of the investigation has eased the pressure," said Pont-de-Metz's mayor, Loic Bulant, as quoted by Le Figaro.

The 32-year-old victim, found by a hiker, was found "with her throat slit, her stomach cut open, her body eviscerated, and above all, apparently arranged in the shape of a cross," the mayor himself stated. However, the local prosecutor's office denied this last detail, later clarifying to BFMTV that "the victim's arms were not in the shape of a cross," but were arranged around her head.
