Two people were arrested by the police shortly after the incident, as later confirmed by local law enforcement.
Several witnesses reported that a man got out of a car on Campbell Parade and opened fire. Other images show two people dressed in black firing shots on the beach.
New South Wales Police said: "Please share our message for residents to avoid the Bondi Beach area while the police operation continues," adding, "We are still asking people in the area to take shelter until we can determine what is happening."
Bondi Beach, located on the eastern outskirts of the city, is one of the most famous beach resorts in the world, renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and golden sand, as well as for its surfing.
