«While I was swimming in Sardinia, a shark attacked me, biting me five times, fortunately only superficially».
A 28-year-old Frenchman experienced a scary moment while vacationing on the island. He's Giovanni Caselli , a resident of the town of Sète , near Montpellier, who told the French newspaper Midi Libre about his ordeal, which was also reported by other French news sites like Corse Matin, and which could have ended in tragedy .
"While I was on the beach, I entered the water for a high-intensity swim for my triathlon training," Caselli explained. At a certain point, however, "I saw the shark in front of me." It was, he said, a blacktip reef shark , generally harmless to humans. "But instead of circling me, it came at me. It came right next to me. Then I started swimming slowly backwards on my back, and that's when it gave me the first bite." The story continues: "I screamed, which excited it even more, and it became more and more aggressive. It kept biting me, and I really started to panic because sharks are usually not alone."
In the end, there were five bites: on the calf, the hand, and the knee. "It was like it was tasting me," commented the 28-year-old, who eventually managed to reach the beach and save himself, despite the shark trying to follow him to shore.
The young man had a huge scare, but no serious consequences. He didn't need medical attention, as the bites only caused superficial wounds. "But I'm keeping an eye on them," he concluded, "because shark teeth are full of bacteria."
