A twenty-one-year-old resident of Veneto, Artiom Naliato, died in the bombing of a training camp in Ukraine, where he had gone to fight as a volunteer .
The young man, of Ukrainian origin —local newspapers report— had been adopted at the age of 12 by a family from Tribano, in the province of Padua . He had recently chosen to leave Tribano to return to defend his native land: he had tracked down a brother and decided to join the resistance against the Russian invasion . A few weeks ago, he returned to the Padua town, then left for the front.
His death occurred last Monday. "We gather with affection and grief around the family who welcomed and raised him with love," wrote Tribano Mayor Massimo Cavazzana on Facebook. "Today, Tribano loses one of its sons. The void he leaves is profound, but we will remember him for the courage of his choices ."
"It was a terrible blow," the mayor continued, "for our community. Naturally, we offer our condolences to the family, but above all, we cannot forget that a twenty-one-year-old man held freedom for his community in his heart. What brought him to Ukraine was certainly his closeness to his brother, but also his desire to make Ukraine free ."
