A Russian military plane crashed this morning in the Belgorod region, on the border with Ukraine. “An accident has occurred, I'm going to the scene,” the governor of the region Vyacheslav Gladkov announced on his Telegram channel.

The news was later confirmed by the Moscow Ministry of Defense that an Ilyushin II-76 military transport plane crashed.

Kiev claims it was shot down by the Ukrainian armed forces: "The plane was carrying missiles towards bases from which the Russians often attack Kharkiv and the region."

The Russians' version is different, according to which there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board who were to be freed as part of an exchange. With them also six crew members and three "companions", reports the Ria Novosti agency.
