Regeni, 007 Egyptians sentenced to ten years for kidnapping: no death sentence

The Rome Assize Court has convicted three Egyptian intelligence agents accused of kidnapping, torturing, and killing Giulio Regeni in Cairo in 2016. The fourth intelligence agent accused was acquitted.

The three Egyptian 007s were convicted only for the kidnapping of Giulio Regeni in Cairo on January 25, 2016. The judges dropped the murder charge, upholding the charges of kidnapping against the convicted.

The three officers were given ten-year sentences: Major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif—for whom the prosecution had requested life imprisonment—and Colonels Uhsam Helmi and Athar Kamel Mohamed. The fourth defendant, General Tariq Sabir, was acquitted.
