Wild boar hunting in Sinis: "Cruel and unacceptable acts"
Lav against what is defined as an extermination: «Unfounded fears and alarms, the slaughter must be suspended»Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
"We ask the Municipality of Cabras, the Province of Oristano, the Region and President Todde to suspend this slaughter and resort to new ethical and effective policies for the management of wild fauna". This is the request of the LAV (Anti-Vivisection League) to protect wild boars in the Sinis, after what happened recently with the appearance of several animals in the area. Which - among other things - led to an ordinance by the mayor of Cabras, Andrea Abis . "An extra hunting season courtesy of the association", the message from the association. ""Invasion of wild boars in the Sinis": this is the alarmism created and spread that pleases an increasingly small and avid minority of hunters, mostly elderly as the statistics indicate".
Lav recalls how the «shootings unleashed in recent days in the Sinis» by platoons of hunters have frightened tourists and residents. «Killings carried out at night near inhabited areas. The danger of accidents that put people's safety at risk is evident», the note. « Shotguns as the only solution in the relationship between man and wild animals. This is no longer acceptable to the vast majority of citizens in 2025 , against hunting and also knowingly against the adoption of this type of cruel solutions by administrations towards animals. Many residents of the Sinis have already expressed their opposition to this project. Mothers and cubs simply looking for a bit of food killed on the spot. Cruel and unacceptable acts, lethal ruthlessness towards helpless sentient beings trying to survive ».
Roberto Corona, head of Lav Cagliari, points out: «All animals must be recognized as having the right to life, wild boars are sentient beings with emotional relationships, a social organization, the desire to live free and the ability to suffer, just like humans. They are a demonized species, a scapegoat to which damage caused by humans and the anthropization of wooded areas is attributed, fueling unfounded fears and building media alarms with the applause of the hunting world». The association also recalls some data: « There is talk of countless road accidents caused by wild boars, yet the latest official data for 2023 is of only one case in the sp6 of Cabras (source “Operational Plan for the Management and Control of Wild Boar Populations in the Province of Oristano” 2023-26)».
Among the solutions proposed by LAV, that of acoustic-sound crossing deterrents: «They have proven to be very effective in other regions, in addition to wildlife crossings and passages». But, above all, the request is for something «effective and non-bloody», such as low-voltage electrified fences and – among the medium-long term options for the management of wild animals – immuno-contraceptive vaccines . As for numbers, «the alleged major damage to agriculture attributed to wild boars is estimated for the entire province of Oristano at around 40,000 euros per year (source “Operational Plan for the Management and Control of Wild Boar Populations in the Province of Oristano” 2023-26)».
"Alternative answers exist, we must grasp them and apply them instead of creating fears with declarations of war on wildlife", continues Lav. " Killing individuals of a species by eradicating it from a territory is neither ethical nor ecological, nature evolves with its balances despite our interference . It is necessary to change the paradigm, not decide anthropocentrically and intervene in a non-speciesist way by recognizing all species' right to exist and live in freedom, respecting their ethology and survival needs".
