The first positive cases of West Nile virus and Usutu virus were recorded this year in San Vero Milis and Oristano. This was reported by the Animal Health Service of the ASL of Oristano.

The ASL 5 Service - directed by Dr. Enrico Vacca, which reports to the Department of Hygiene and Prevention directed by Dr. Maria Valentina Marras - has already sent a draft resolution to the Municipalities of San Vero Milis and Oristano, but also to all the administrations of the province of Oristano in order to implement a whole series of preventive actions to avoid the spread of the two viruses and contagion also to human beings.

In San Vero Milis, some killed crows tested positive for West Nile, in the Oristano area a group of captured mosquitoes contracted both the West Nile virus and the Usutu Virus.

"The situation is under control," explains Dr. Vacca, "the disease is transmitted only through mosquito bites."

In 2023, two men, a 72-year-old from Siamanna and a 52-year-old from Siamaggiore, also in the province of Oristano, had contracted the West Nile virus. And again a group of mosquitoes positive in Torregrande, two crows in Solarussa and a horse in Paulilatino. Last year, three starlings in Oristano and two pools of mosquitoes, one in Arborea and the other in Oristano, had also tested positive for Usutu Virus.
