Jovanotti Park in Sant'Elia will expand thanks to a new €400,000 redevelopment project. The Cagliari City Council has approved the technical and economic feasibility project, which aims to improve the safety, environmental quality, and usability of a green space spanning over 10,000 square meters, located between Piazza Callas, Via Schiavazzi, and the old Sant'Elia district .
The park, inaugurated in its current form in March 2021 after a previous restoration project, features a children's play area, a multipurpose sports field, and social spaces. Its name commemorates the singer-songwriter Jovanotti , who in 2008 donated several trees that were later planted in the area.
The new project was born from the need to complete and improve the park's facilities, which still presents some critical issues, particularly regarding the delimitation of spaces, internal connections and services available to visitors.
The main project will involve the construction of a new perimeter fence, consisting of a low reinforced concrete wall with a metal grille above it . This structure will replace the previous fences, which have been vandalized and partially stolen. Four entrances are also planned , connected by a stabilized earth pedestrian path, designed to ensure easier access between the different areas.
The project includes the installation of twenty new benches and five waste bins, as well as the creation of a water connection and the installation of three drinking fountains, two for park users and one for the dog area .
New trees, an irrigation system, and approximately 250 square meters of turf in the central area are also planned. The goal is to increase the greenery, improve the microclimate, and create new shaded areas, making the space more comfortable, especially during the summer months.
The works also include the enhancement of the children's play area and the completion of the lighting through the installation of twelve street lamps, with particular attention to the entrances, pedestrian paths and rest areas .
The overall budget is €400,000. Approval concerns the technical and economic feasibility project: before proceeding with the subsequent phases, the authorization from the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape must be obtained, as well as other opinions from the relevant authorities.
«The redevelopment project of Jovanotti Park», declared councilor Alessandro Cao, «with new paths, greater attention to greenery, new furnishings and services, aims to make this space even more usable and welcoming for residents, families and children».
