It only took the first birds testing positive for West Nile disease virus for fear to return .
West Nile Fever in the Oristano area has already caused great alarm in the past, with infections among people and even several deaths . Now, after the case found in Arborea on a crow , the municipal administrations are strengthening disinfestation interventions while the ASL is taking action with indications to prevent contagion.
"In collaboration with other competent bodies, the spread of the virus is monitored through constant surveillance and analysis of insects and birds," confirms the manager Enrico Vacca. Veterinarian Anna Paola Corda reminds that "in the event that the body of a bird is found, it is useful to report its presence to the ASL 5, by calling the numbers 0783 317767 or 317769 or by bringing it to our veterinary services."
In addition to pest control activities, it is essential that citizens also take special precautions .
"It is necessary to avoid stagnant water , an ideal environment for the development of mosquito larvae," emphasizes Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Prevention department . "It is important to clean drains, protect your home with mosquito nets and yourself by using repellent sprays, wearing long-sleeved, light-colored clothing ."
The ASL also reminds us that in 80% of cases, those infected by the West Nile virus do not show symptoms .
Approximately 19% of those infected may develop a flu-like illness, accompanied by fever, headache, nausea and vomiting .
"In less than 1 percent of subjects (0.6%) the virus causes serious neurological consequences such as encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or flaccid paralysis - continues Marras - These are mainly elderly and immunosuppressed subjects, with previous pathologies and are therefore more vulnerable".
