Two new cases of West Nile in Sardinia : a woman over sixty from Oristano , who went to the emergency room with flu-like symptoms and was discharged after the visit, and a man over seventy from Samugheo , currently hospitalized at the San Martino hospital, were infected.
This brings the number of confirmed cases of the virus in 2025 to 26, all in the province of Oristano.
As usual, the measures required in the event of a positive case have been implemented: an epidemiological investigation has been conducted by the Department of Health and Prevention of the Local Health Authority (ASL 5) and the area where those infected with the virus live has been designated for disinfection within 200 meters of their homes.
"We once again urge the public, especially the elderly and frail, to remain vigilant and continue to protect themselves from mosquitoes, the virus's main transmitters," says Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Health and Prevention Department of Oristano's Local Health Authority (ASL) 5.
Even after the recent rains, it's crucial to avoid standing water, which is a breeding ground for mosquito larvae . Therefore, frequently empty pet food bowls, plant pots, containers, and children's pools. It's also important to wear light-colored, covering clothing, especially at dusk and at night, when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito repellent sprays and secure your doors and windows with screens to keep your home safe.
