Water leaks into the gas mains: an odyssey for utilities in Quartu.

Days of minimal water pressure searching for a hidden leak, and taps running dry for several hours a few nights ago, weren't enough. Now, in Quartu, the gas mains are also causing problems. Or rather, it's the same undetected water leak that has also knocked out the city's gas mains.
The reason is simple: water infiltrated the gas lines, effectively leaving entire families without water and forcing Abbanoa to suspend ongoing water efficiency improvements between Via Marconi and Via Cimabue while they locate the leak.
The alarm had already been raised in recent days when firefighters had to intervene in the Piazza Sant'Elena area due to the smell of gas that made the air unbreathable.
"Medea and Abbanoa technicians have been working for days to identify the source of the water leak and its entry point into the gas lines," Medea Gas explains. "Meanwhile, they've managed to clear a large portion of the network of water, but without Abbanoa identifying the source of the leak, it continues to infiltrate. Nonetheless, by isolating the gas network, they've managed to contain the water, restoring gas to almost all affected customers. Currently, only nine customers are waiting for gas to be restored."
