Waste collection: Sardinia is a virtuous region. But recycling ends up in the North
The Island is the black sheep of recycling. Plastic, glass and metals: 250 thousand tons processed on the PeninsulaPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
A few percentage points still to fill and Sardinia, already the third region in Italy for separate waste collection, is advancing rapidly towards the 80% target set for 2029, which has already been achieved by 170 out of 377 municipalities. For the moment, it stops at 76.46% (2023 data), behind Veneto and Emilia Romagna, and the Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi is right to underline these " extraordinary results , a source of pride for all of Sardinia". It's a shame, however, that of the almost 545 thousand tons of selected waste , about 250 thousand are sent to the Peninsula. All stuff that, with recovery and recycling, could instead create added value here, and not elsewhere.
Excluding the organic fraction (41.8% of the total separated waste, or 227,848 tons of organic waste and garden cuttings), paper and cardboard (17.1%, or 93,109 tons), and a small fraction of the 15 thousand tons of street sweeping waste, everything else - with all due respect for the environment - is loaded onto trucks and, after the journey by ship and again by road, delivered to the recovery centers in Northern Italy, with the recovery chain therefore not being closed on the Island.
