The basilica of San Saturnino with the garden and the archaeological park will be accessible to everyone via walkways that will lead visitors along the entire area and steps that will allow you to better see the archaeological excavations with the finds, which are currently under the covers.

This important site that represents the history and identity of Cagliari will be restored and enhanced, which aim to create a connection between the basilica, the archaeological area and the historical park within an integrated system that can also be fully used by citizens with motor difficulties. The construction site will be set up as early as tomorrow while the actual works will start on January 1st and will be completed by September , barring any hitches due to any new archaeological finds.

The intervention, for which 520,000 euros have been allocated, is the last piece to complete the strategic plan "Major cultural heritage projects" - "Restoration and enhancement of the Cagliari museum system" financed in the 2017-2018 year with 2 million euro and which involved the National Archaeological Museum, the National Art Gallery, the San Pancrazio Space and the Ex Royal Museum.

The project was presented today in a press conference inside the basilica, which was attended by Patricia Olivo , director of the regional secretariat of the ministry of culture, Luana Toniolo , director of the Sardinia regional directorate of museums, Sergio Rosanova , designer and director of works, and Patrizia Luciana Tommassetti , architect officer of the Regional Secretariat and responsible for the procedure.

" The works by the Regional Secretariat will allow for a better appreciation of the archaeological evidence, now not very visible, and to increase the legibility of the site in its historical and chronological complexity ", said Toniolo. "The new spaces that will be created - explained the architect Rosanova - if on the one hand they will give rise to a materially wider and more coordinated visit itinerary, expanding the visit walkways and connecting the levels, on the other hand they will give new possibilities of use of the site".

«Today the first stage of the long planning work aimed at a new arrangement of the archaeological area and the historical park of San Saturnino is concluded - added Olivo for his part - A long work of consultation with all the institutions involved beyond the Secretariat, the Superintendency and the Sardinian regional directorate of museums which will be able to make the most of the important site and the ancient basilica, a symbolic place for the Archdiocese, for the city and for tourist use".
