If Sardinia breathes a sigh of relief and remains colored green in the European map, drawn up by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, together with five other Italian regions, there remains concern about the number of people who end up in hospital. Except for very rare cases, they are not vaccinated, even at a young age. In the island, only 40 percent of the immunosuppressed received the third dose, only 21 percent of frail, very old, over 60 and RSA guests, and 18 percent of healthcare workers.
Commissioner Francesco Figliuolo and Health Minister Roberto Speranza have already launched their call on the acceleration of vaccinations.
“It is clear - explains Giovanni Sotgiu, professor of medical statistics at the University of Sassari - that the epidemiological situation is evolving in a negative sense. Last week, in Italy, the RT was below 1, now it is above. In Sardinia we are in better shape, but as for the Italians it should not have been a certainty that we were doing well compared to other countries such as Germany, now for us Sardinians it must not be a consolation that in other regions they are worse than we".
We are already talking about the fourth wave and the number of those who should undergo the third dose “necessary to reactivate the immune defenses” is growing. Studies published by the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine have shown that about five months after the second dose there is a drop in immunity, especially in neutralizing antibodies, for all vaccinated, but particularly evident in males over 65 and immunosuppressed. ".
Initially, however, it was said that the protection would last for at least nine months: “A forecast of something that should have been observed over time. We have no experience with this vaccine, we proceed day by day ”.
