Domenico Marras, poet, Knight of the Republic, and Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, died yesterday in Uri. Born in Uri in 1929, Marras is remembered by the town's mayor, Matteo Emanuele Dettori.
"A man of authentic values," he wrote on his Facebook profile, "kind and elegant, yet approachable. A father, yet a son: a son of his time and, above all, of his country, which he never forgot."
Born into a poor family, he gradually gained significant recognition, first in the military and then as head of the employment service for the Alghero district. He has written five collections of poetry and is included in several anthologies, such as "La poesia contemporanea."
"He always tried to see the sun, even on cloudy days," the mayor continues, "and in his poems and stories, his infinite sense of hope always shines through; just as his profound religious sense emerges, aware of the encounter that awaits every baptized person one day."
“Thank you, Uncle Domè,” he concludes, “for what you did in life, for the words you dispensed, for your simple greatness.”
