Healthcare expenses represent an increasingly heavy component in household budgets. To say this are the data contained in the 17th report of Crea, the Center for Applied Economic Research in Health, of the Tor Vergata University of Rome.

In Sardinia, confirms Alberto Farina (regional secretary of Cisl Pensionati), “we have reached the point where many families have to choose whether to eat or take care of themselves. The situation is really dramatic, people are dying, and often without even a diagnosis, because they have not been able to be examined ".

And after Covid, underlined Pierpaolo Sileri, Undersecretary of Health, “a second pandemic awaits us that will last more years than the one we experienced due to the virus. I am referring to the pandemic of undiagnosed people due to missed screening, the pandemic for the most severe pathologies that patients will have due to delayed procedures. And this will lead to an increase in patient management costs and, unfortunately, in the medical-legal disputes - for this reason I hope soon a health arbitration that can reduce it as much as possible - and a lack of training and research ».

“Citizens come to me in despair - says Don Giorgio Fois, parish priest of San Pio X in Iglesias -, they ask me to help them because they cannot access medical examinations, but what can I do but console them and pray? We celebrated 107 funerals in 2021, a number never seen in our church's fifty years of life, all died because they were not followed on their medical path, perhaps many could have been saved, or at least have a little longer life long. It is an immense regret. Of course there are poor people who cannot pay for treatment, but also well-off, left to fend for themselves. Covid prevailed over everything, vaccines - fundamental - as well. But all the rest cannot be omitted ”.
