Tyrrenian Link (West Branch), Sacoi 3 and connection with Terra Mala: the Region has approved the formal agreement with Terna for the implementation of the three interventions which will link Sardinia to the Peninsula in terms of energy. The works, reads a note, "will promote the development and integration of energy produced from renewable sources".

Today's agreement, let Terna know, «is a decisive step that initiates the final phase of the authorization process for the three works in progress at the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and is the fruit of the fruitful institutional collaboration between Terna and the region".

In particular:

The Tyrrhenian Link – West Branch is the approximately 480 km section of the 3.7 billion euro submarine power line which will connect Sicily and Sardinia. From the landfall of the cable in Terra Mala, in the province of Cagliari, the underground cables will mainly travel along already existing roads for about 30 km, leaving the environment and landscape unaltered, up to Selargius, where the conversion station will be built in areas adjacent to the already existing electrical station. The Sardinian Municipalities involved in the passage of the underground cable, all falling within the metropolitan area of Cagliari, are: Maracalagonis, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant'Elena, Settimo San Pietro and Sinnai.

«The work», it is explained, «represents one of the country's main infrastructural interventions to continue to improve the security, adequacy and flexibility of the transmission grid, reduce imbalances on the internal market, decarbonise the energy system in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The connection will improve the electricity exchange capacity between Campania, Sicily and Sardinia, significantly accelerating the development of renewable sources and the phase-out of coal in electricity generation. The new interconnection is a cutting-edge project which involves the construction of two 1000 MW submarine electricity lines in direct current (one from Campania to Sicily and one from Sicily to Sardinia) for a total length of approximately 970 km and land connections for about 60km. The work will be fully operational in 2028».

The SACOI3 is the new 200 kV electrical connection which will renew the current marine cable between Sardinia, Corsica and mainland Italy using modern technologies. The intervention, for which Terna will invest 950 million euros, «is aimed at guaranteeing greater stability and reliability of the electricity system, at improving the quality of the service, the efficiency of the grid and the integration of renewable sources. The project includes a converter station located adjacent to the existing Codrongianos electrical station; two terrestrial cables corresponding to the landing place of the marine cables in Santa Teresa di Gallura and two marine cables connecting Sardinia (landing point of Santa Teresa di Gallura) and Corsica».

The 150 kV connection of the CP Terra Mala provides for a new underground cable of approximately 3 km connecting the existing Quartucciu-Villasimius power line and the future Primary substation owned by the local distributor.
