"We want to know what happened." The family of the 35-year-old who died last night in Bancali from the effects of a fire in his cell is demanding clarity on what happened to their relative in the prison. Vittoria, one of his aunts, says: "He was in a protected area. How could all this happen?"

The tragedy occurred just hours after the man's mother arrived in prison, where she had allegedly given him some clothes he had requested. And the questions, at this point, began pouring in. "He had hoped to be released in July, but the request to revoke the measure, presented by lawyer Tania Decortes, was rejected." "He had been in Bancali for several months and said he wasn't doing it anymore," his aunt recalls, "and that he hadn't done anything serious."

Then, in May, another inmate threw boiling oil at the 35-year-old, causing burns. "I won't tell you what condition we found him in," the relative recalls tearfully, lamenting that they had only learned of the incident through their lawyer.

The man's difficulties began several years ago, amid personal frailties and addictions. "He was a gentle giant, a skilled worker. But sometimes, unfortunately, he would change. We tried to support him in many ways, and he had been in two communities." The pain also highlights the helplessness of families struggling with similar situations.

"Only those who have lived through these situations can understand what you're going through. We need help from the institutions. We hoped he'd be sent to a facility, but that didn't happen." However, until a few days ago, the 35-year-old appeared calm and collected, making his sudden death seem even more senseless. An investigation, led by prosecutor Camilla Battaglini, will shed light on the matter.
