In February 2021, the municipality installed 33 new video cameras, expanding its electronic surveillance fleet to 42 devices. But after a (brief) period of operation, following six years of total blackout, the electronic eyes stopped recording movements on the streets, and currently, a third of the cameras are off . The Tortolì municipal administration is putting an end to the agony of the video surveillance system (which cost 150,000 euros) by entrusting its maintenance to Vedetta 2 Mondialpol for a sum of 56,000 euros. A three-year contract has been signed .
Experts from the specialized company will revive all the public video cameras installed in the most sensitive areas of the city. Not only will the devices be maintained, but the administration has also expressed its desire to integrate the video surveillance system. Tony Secci, security systems manager for the security firm Vedetta 2 Mondialpol, explains: "In modern society, video surveillance has become an integral part of our daily lives. The presence of surveillance cameras in public places, shops, offices, and even in our homes has become increasingly widespread. One of the main benefits is improved public safety. Cameras installed in public places, such as squares, parks, and city streets, allow for greater monitoring of activities taking place in those areas. This can deter criminal and unwanted behavior, providing a sense of security for citizens."
The video surveillance system's operations center will be located at the local police headquarters. The footage could also be a crucial aid for law enforcement. "It helps identify and solve crimes more quickly. Video recordings can serve as crucial evidence during investigations, helping law enforcement identify suspects and reconstruct events. This can lead to increased crime resolution rates and more effective investigations. The visible presence of cameras has been shown to have a preventative effect on crime."
